Georgia Grower Recognized as a Leader in Innovative Practices

Congratulations to Georgia grower John McCormick – state winner of the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Farmer of the Year award.

Recognized as a leader in innovative practices, McCormick relies on FieldNET® by Lindsay to monitor and control the irrigation on more than 1,300 acres near the Ogeechee River in east Georgia.

“John bought his first Zimmatic pivot in the late 70’s, and it’s still going strong. He now has a total of seven pivots – five Zimmatic and two competitor pivots that came with the property he bought,” said Mike Cox of C & R Industrial Services, a Zimmatic dealer in Statesboro, Georgia. “He added FieldNET to one of the Zimmatic pivots and retrofitted the competitor pivots with Pivot Control – which gives him the ability to remotely monitor and control the pivots that are several miles his home.”

McCormick grows crops on a total of 1,040 acres, producing cotton, peanuts, corn and soybeans. He credits technology for helping him make the most of his operation.

“We set goals for our farm and for our individual crops,” McCormick told Farm Press. “We try to make small improvements each year to maintain a sustainable farm.”

“John is a great farmer. He’s a very smart farmer,” Cox said. “He doesn’t just go for the latest and greatest – he invests in products that will help him save time, resources and money. That’s why he’s so successful.”

As the Georgia state winner of the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo award, McCormick joins nine other individuals as finalists for the overall award that will be announced Tuesday, October 18, at the Sunbelt Ag Expo.
