Variable Frequency Drives Boost Efficiency, Lower Energy Costs

As growers search for ways to become more efficient, many have started utilizing Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to better regulate water pressure for their irrigation equipment.

“This technology automatically adjusts pump speed to match the system demand, saving energy and water,” said Christopher Higgins, Zimmatic global product manager. “We recently added a new programmable logic controller (PLC) to our VFD panels. This new controller decreases set-up time which, creates even more efficiencies.”

Higgins said VFDs are particularly valuable for corners, multiple pivots with a common pump header, pivots on inclines or hills, Precision VRI, turning valves on/off and drip irrigation zones with varying flow and pressure.

“Our VFDs can help growers save as much as 25 percent on energy costs,” Higgins said. “They also eliminate water surges and other strains on other components – reducing maintenance costs and adding years to the life of an irrigation system.”
